After her Advanced Level exams, the path Bernice Afanwi had planned for herself did not work out. Looking back, she had never really had the guidance to understand that path in the first place. That setback is the reason she now spends her time helping other young people choose theirs.

Ndufong Bernice Afanwi grew up in Bamenda and holds a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Bamenda. She is a public speaker, a youth leader, the Communications Officer at Let's Talk Tech, and the founder of Career Forge Academy, a youth initiative for career guidance.

A setback that became a mission

Bernice saw the same problem she had faced all around her: young people making big decisions about school and work with almost no structured career guidance, often choosing because of outside pressure or limited information.

So in January 2026 she founded Career Forge Academy. Its mission is to "forge a NextGen of purpose-driven, skilled, and career-oriented teens and youths through intentional guidance". The academy works on career orientation, academic guidance, purpose discovery, volunteerism and skill building.

  • Career-guidance activities in schools and communities have reached 300+ students and young people.
  • She led the development of a Student Academic and Career Clarity Assessment to understand what secondary-school students struggle with.
  • She worked on a questionnaire survey of 150+ Form 3 students in Bamenda about their academic and career decisions.
  • She organized the webinar "What Next After the GCE: Clarity Before Career" for students and recent GCE graduates, with 20+ participants.

Where she is heading

Bernice wants to be a role model whose story shows young people they can come back from setbacks and build a future that means something to them. She wants Career Forge Academy to become a leading place where young people get structured, informed help with career decisions.

Better career guidance, started early, can mean fewer young people stuck in the wrong career. Over time, she hopes it can also help with youth unemployment, by giving young people clearer, more purposeful paths into work.
